How to make Instant Mud
The Golden Ratio:
- US: 1 Gallon Water + 1 oz Powder = 1 Gallon of Mud
- 2 Gallons Water + 2 oz Powder = 2 Gallon of Mud
- Metric: 4 Liters Water + 30g Powder = 4 Liters of Mud
- 8 Liters Water + 60g Powder = 8 Liters of Mud
Making a Full Batch?
- Add the entire bag to 60 Gallons (230L) of water to make a full 60-gallon mud pit.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Water First: Fill your container with the desired amount of clean water.
- The Sprinkle: Lightly sprinkle the powder into the water while stirring. Tip: Mixing while you sprinkle prevents clumping and ensures a smooth texture.
- Adjust:
- For Blasters & Balloons: Add a splash more water for a "runny" mud.
- For Wrestling & Pits: Add a dash more powder for a "thick" mud.
β οΈ Important Rules
- Water Quality: Use fresh water only. DO NOT use salt water or high-chlorine pool water, as this will prevent the mud from thickening.
Clean-Up & Disposal Guide
Instant Mud is non-toxic and biodegradable, making clean-up straightforward. Depending on where you played, follow these steps for the easiest disposal:
1. The "Salt Trick" (For Containers, Tubs & Pools)
If your mud is contained in a pool or bucket, you can turn it back into liquid in seconds!
- How to do it: Stir in approximately 1 cup of table salt per 15 gallons (60L) of mud.
- The Result: The salt breaks down the mud into brown water, which can then be easily poured away down a drain or into a safe disposal area.
- β οΈ CAUTION: Never use salt directly on mud on a lawn, as salt will damage the grass.
2. Large Piles on the Ground
- Scoop & Bin: For large amounts of mud on the ground, the most efficient method is to scoop the mud into heavy-duty waste bags for disposal in your regular trash.
- Smaller amounts: Any remaining residue can be hosed down into the grass and soil.
3. Disposal Tips on Grass & Lawns
If youβve used the mud outdoors on a lawn, and are unable to scoop it up, follow these "best practice" steps:
- Spread it Thin: Do not leave mud in thick piles. Use a garden rake or broom to spread the mud wide and thin across the grass.
- Sun & UV Exposure:Β Spreading it thin allows the sunβs UV rays to reach the polymers. UV light is the fastest way to "cut" the polymer chains and break them down.
- Water:Β Natural rainfall or a hosing will wash the particles into the soil, where natural microbial action finishes the decomposition process.
- Safety Note: Mud remains slippery until it has fully broken down. Mark the area as a "No-Go Zone" for foot traffic until the grass is clear.
4. Skin & Clothes
Skin: Most mud will rinse off with a hose. To remove any temporary tinting from the skin (especially after handling the dry powder), simply wash with warm soapy water.
Clothes: For the best results, hose off the bulk of the mud while itβs still wet, then toss the items into a normal washing machine cycle with regular detergent.
