What is a glow in the dark party?
A glow in the dark party, also known as a glow party, neon party or black light party, is a party theme in which everything glows (or fluoresces). Usually the more things that glow the the better. UV black lights are often used, which are designed to make white and neon colored objects fluoresce (glow). Glow sticks and other flashing lights are also popular at glow in the dark parties.
Once you have blacklights in place it is simply a matter of adding as many fluorescent objects as possible to the room and making sure your party guests dress in their most colorful neon outfits. When the room is dark and the uv black lights are switched on, all the neon colors will pop with a magnificent glow.Â
Which black lights to use for a glow in the dark party?
For glow in the dark parties our Glow Party World Glowave Black Light Glow Party kit is the best choice. Each blacklight strip kit comes with 4 long length LED black lights. These blacklight strip lights are designed to surround the glow party in UV light, with one on each wall, so that people, items, and decorations will glow from all angles. The LED black lights stick to the wall with an adhesive backing, making them super easy to set up. The strips are designed to run vertically or horizontally up the walls to suit any space.
LED black lights are more powerful, more energy efficient, and longer lasting, than other black light types, such as black light bulbs or fluorescent tubes. The LED black lights are reusable and pack away into a small box for future use. Click here to learn more about the best black lights for glow parties. Â
How many black lights do I need for a glow in the dark party?
We always recommend a minimum of 4 black lights so you can position one on each wall of your party space to surround your glow party in UV light. The Glowave kit comes with four long length black lights per box.
One Glowave Blacklight kit is great for a living room, lounge room, single or double lock up garage, bedroom or most outdoor patio areas.
The larger the party space the more black lights you will need to cover the area in UV light.
For bigger rooms of about 22ft x 22ft (7m x 7m) up to 50ft x 50ft (15m x 15m) you might want to consider purchasing two Glowave glow party kits to ensure you have vibrant glowing colors in every corner of the room.
Four Black light kits (16 black light strips) is a great amount of UV light for a basketball or tennis court sized room, like a school gymnasium or a church hall.
Where to have a glow in the dark party?
As the name implies a glow in the dark party needs to be held in a fairly dark space so that the colors and flashing lights pop. Glow in the dark parties are best suited for night time events in dark rooms.
Can I do a glow party in the daytime?
If required, you can do glow in the dark parties in the day by blackening out the windows inside a room in your house using rolls of black plastic. This is a great glow in the dark party idea for younger kids that don't usually stay up late.
Can I do a glow party outside?
It is possible to have glow in the dark parties outside as long as you do not have bright white light shining into the space from houses or street lights. Large sheets of black plastic can be wrapped around patio areas or gazebos if you want to make them darker spaces. The black plastic can then be used to spray paint fluorescent party decorations. Glow in the dark parties under patios and awnings are a good choice as the lights can be run up the posts or along the beams.
If you don't want people inside the house, having a glow in the dark party in a garage, shed, large tent, or marquee could be a good option.

Best black lights for glow parties
How to set up a black light party?
Do you need black lights for a glow in the dark party?
It is possible to do a glow in the dark party without black lights however it is not recommended. Some phosphorescent materials absorb light during the day and then slowly release it as visible light at night. These materials are sometimes made into t-shirts and glow in the dark stars. They usually glow a green color. To add extra color to a glow in the dark party without black lights most people use glow sticks. Glow sticks when cracked create a chemical reaction that causes them to glow in a range of colors. To ensure the widest range of bright glowing colors, decorations and costumes at your party it is highly recommended that you use black lights.Â
What colors glow in the dark?
Most neon colors will glow in the dark underneath black lights. The most common colors to use are fluorescent orange, green, yellow and pink. White glows in a blueish looking color underneath black lights. There are some blue and purple colors that will glow but not always. Keep in mind that even though objects are neon colored not all materials will glow in the dark (fluoresce).
What items glow under black lights?
We have found that many types of neon plastics do not glow (such as plastic table cloths and many other hard plastics). Most neon paper products and fabrics glow so these are great for costumes and decorations. Fluorescent paints and highlighter pens also glow so you can use these to create party posters or to paint your face and body. Please note that most blue and purple highlighter pens will not usually glow, so you are best to stick with the other colors mentioned. Party GOAT's UV neon color powders glow and are great fun for throwing around a party or over your guests.
How to decorate a glow party?
When decorating a glow in the dark party it is all about fluorescent color. The more fluorescent colored items in the room, the greater the effect under the black lights with more items glowing.
Here are some glow in the dark decoration ideas to help you with transforming your party space -Â
- Surround the glow in the dark party in UV black lights.
- Hang fluorescent paper products around the walls - such as neon bunting, hanging garland, or happy birthday signs
- Make party posters using neon paints and highlighter pens.
- Use UV reacting fluorescent balloons, or light up LED balloons.
- Use neon tape to mark out an illuminated dance floor like back in the disco era.Â
- Buy UV reacting cups and plates, or use neon sticker dots to decorate your normal cups and plates.
- Use fluorescent colored napkins and cutlery.
- Use rolls of neon fabric as table and chair coverings.
- Hand out lots of glow sticks, or use them to wrap around cups.
- And most fun of all - decorate your guests with neon powders, paints or highlighter pens!
Which balloons to use for glow in the dark parties?Â
Every party needs balloons and a glow in the dark party is no different. Look for balloons specifically labeled as neon as they will not glow unless they are a very bright fluorescent color. The thicker the balloon the better it will work. We often find that the balloons glow very brightly before they are blown up. As you blow air into the balloon the rubber stretches which also stretches the color making the glow a little less bright. Stick to thicker/better quality balloons to help prevent this. If you are not using black lights for your glow party then you can purchase balloons with flashing LED lights inside.
How to decorate tables, chairs and other furniture for a glow in the dark party?
Don't forget to add color to your glow party by decorating your furniture. The easiest way to do this is to buy rolls of different colored neon fabric. Cut the fabric into suitable sizes and use it as table cloths or to wrap your chairs. Be careful when buying plastic table cloths. We have often found that even though a table cloth may be white or neon colored (and you might assume it will glow) the plastic material will not absorb/reflect the black light the way neon fabric will. To avoid disappointment we recommend using cotton or polyester materials rather than plastic.
How to make black light posters for a glow in the dark party?
Making posters is a great way to decorate a glow in the dark party as you can make them with personalized messages or themes e.g. Happy birthday Dave or Class of 2020!
To make your own black light posters simply buy some poster paper in either, black, white, or fluorescent colors and paint party messages, or themed images in fluorescent colored paints. If you paint on neon or white poster paper the poster will glow as well as the paint. Painting on a black piece of poster paper is a good idea as the paint will really stand out on the dark black background. You can also use neon spray paints on black plastic as shown in the photo.
Glow in the dark posters using coloring books
There are certain kinds of coloring books which are awesome for glow in the dark parties as the background of the images are black. This means that only the areas between the black lines will glow when you color them in. You can color these in quickly with some awesome colors without worrying too much about staying within the lines. Rip them out of the book and stick them all over the walls to show off your mad skills. You can also find images online to print and color in. Highlighters will work fine for coloring (green, yellow, pink and orange colors work best - often blue, purple or red highlighters don't glow, although depending on the ink, you may get lucky with some brands).
Black Light Posters
To create a psychedelic theme for your party there are some pretty epic poster designs available for purchase that are specially designed to glow in the dark underneath black lights.
Glow in the dark plates, cups and cutlery
You can find and purchase special neon colored plates, cups and cutlery that are designed to glow underneath black lights. They look pretty awesome. Check the reviews to make sure they actually glow. There are many glow party plates with glow party designs on them that don't glow. If you cannot find items that are designed to glow under black lights a good idea is to buy neon colored stickers and stick them to the outside of your plastic cups and plates. We often purchase neon sticker dots from a stationary store and add a bunch of them in various colors on our table and drink ware.
Glow in the dark bottles
Print funny labels for your drinks (e.g. poison). Color them in and stick them to your drink bottles/liquor bottle as shown in the examples. These are perfect for Halloween Glow Parties.

What to wear to a glow in the dark party?Â
If you are wondering what outfit to wear to a glow in the dark party you first need to find out if the person hosting the party is using black lights. If the party has black lights then your glow in the dark outfit should involve neon fluorescent colored clothing. The items that tend to glow the best are fluorescent orange, pink, green and yellow. Click here for a detailed guide on what to wear to a black light party. The more colored items you wear the better you will look. You could consider adding accessories that you wouldn't normally wear, such as, ties, bow ties, gloves, leggings, hats, and wigs. The more colorful the better!
If the glow in the dark party is being hosted without black lights then you will have less options with your clothing choices. You will need to find clothing that is phosphorescent. This means the design on the clothes will absorb light during the day and release it slowly at night without the need for a black light (like the glow stars that people put on the ceiling). Alternatively you can connect a bunch of glow sticks together and wrap them all around you.
Glow in the dark makeup ideas
If you are going to a glow in the dark party with black lights, don't forget about your makeup. There are lots of fluorescent make up products that look amazing underneath black lights such as UV reacting, eye shadow, lip gloss, nail polish, and hair sprays. Face paint also looks great so if you don't want to buy special makeup you can just use face paint. Click here for more glow in the dark make up ideas!
Glow in the dark pens and paints
One of the best things about glow in the dark parties is that you can get super creative drawing awesome glowing tattoos and designs on each other with UV reacting pens or paints. If you are hosting a glow in the dark party with black lights make sure you supply lots of neon paints or highlighter pens so that your party guests can show off their artistic flair drawing on each other. Fluorescent paints tend look the best but can also get a bit messy, so highlighters are also a great option. There are also fabric paints you can buy for t-shirt designs. You could tell your guest to wear a cheap white t-shirt that you can draw on throughout the night.
What food to serve at a glow in the dark party?
There are many lists of food items online that are meant to glow underneath black lights. We have tested a few of these and found fairly disappointing results (e.g. ketchup, bananas). We generally found that items that are naturally white tend to glow, such as vanilla ice cream or yogurt, white bread or white pasta e.g. pad thai. Some potato chips look good underneath black lights. We did some research into glow in the dark icing sugar, and while these products do exist and look awesome, they tend to be for display purposes only and are not edible (what's the point of an awesome looking cake if you can't eat it!).  One way to cheat a little in making glow in the dark foods is to add some Vitamin B. Vitamin B naturally glows underneath black lights in bright colors and looks amazing! You can get vitamin B tablets in a few different colors that can be broken down into a powder and mixed into the food. You could add vitamin B to things such as jello, or mix it in with your dips (only problem is everything will taste a bit like vitamin B). Alternatively if you want your snack table to look awesome but without the toxic additives, or vitamin B flavor just stick to awesome neon, glow in the dark cake toppers and glowing food labels.
Glow Party Drink Recipes
If you want to wow your party guests with glow in the dark drinks you can add the following ingredients -
Energy drinks - Most energy drinks such as monster energy will glow under black lights.
Vitamin B tablets - vitamin B glows under black lights. Add some vitamin B to any drink and it will start to glow.
Tonic water - tonic water will glow a faint blue color under black lights.
Milk - As milk is white it will glow underneath blacklights.Â
Glow in the dark party invitations
When creating your glow in the dark party invitations remember that a glow in the dark party is all about the color! We recommend doing the invitations on a black background with lots of neon colors. Make sure to tell your guests if it is a glow in the dark party with or without black lights so they can wear the correct clothing. You could share our link on what to wear to a glow party to give them some ideas. If you have some extra money to spend you could send a small black light torch with each invitation. This way your guests can test to see which items of clothing will glow when choosing their glow in the dark party outfit. You could also write a secret note on the invitation in invisible ink. This is a special ink that is only revealed underneath a black light and is bound to wow your guests.Â
Glow in the dark party favorsÂ
If you want to give your guests some thank you gifts on the way out the door, you can include a bunch of glow party related objects. Make a bag with some unused glow sticks or some small flashing novelty items. You could also include a small black light torch and some invisible ink pens so they can write secret notes and messages.Â
